Public health report: overdose deaths rising, Narcan vending machine cited as success

Kevin Hughes of District Health Department #10 and epidemiologist Chelsea Rossow presented the department’s annual report focusing on mental health, financial security and access to care. They reported that Kalkaska’s overdose mortality is increasing more slowly than the state overall but noted the county is still seeing increases. Rossow presented ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) household statistics and cited a local growth rate of roughly 3.6% per year.
Hughes highlighted the health department’s harm-reduction efforts, describing the "success of Narcan vending machine at Health Department" and noting mobile units have been scheduled to serve the community based on that success. Hughes also discussed staffing reductions and the need for continued state and local coordination on communicable disease reporting.
