Sheriff Whiteford briefed the board on staffing and compensation requests, reminding the committee of a Dispatch Open House and asking that elected officials receive a $1.00-per-hour increase to mirror other employees, that a previously requested lump-sum average-wage payment from early 2024 be reconsidered, and that health insurance buyouts be credited to the primary insured by position rather than by relationship.
"the health care buyout should be based on individual employee position, not relationship;" Whiteford said, urging that the buyout eligibility mirror administrative practice and preserve fairness across positions. He noted historical disparity in elected-official pay compared with comparison counties and said competitive wages are needed to attract future candidates.
Commissioners asked for detailed financial analysis before approving wage changes. The board reached consensus to credit the primary insured the 2025 health-insurance buyout payments and to table the $1.00 increase and the earlier lump-sum average-wage request for consideration at a Personnel Committee meeting scheduled the next week. No formal salary change was adopted at the May 14 meeting.
