Battlers representatives say county administrator discouraged outside business; request declined meeting with board

Representatives for a local recreation group alleged a county administrator contacted another county to dissuade them from contracting with the group and said the board declined their request for a meeting to resolve the matter.
Andrew Dibble and Megan Hacker, representatives of the Battlers, told the board they had settled a late-payment issue with the Kaliseum but that the Kalkaska County Administrator then contacted the Otsego County Administrator in an effort to deter future business with the Battlers.
"the Kalkaska County Administrator contacted the Otsego County Administrator attempting to dissuade them from doing business with the Battlers," Dibble said, recounting why the group felt county staff had been unprofessional. The representatives also said they had requested a meeting with the Board of Commissioners that the board declined.
Commissioner Truman Bicum suggested the group should have scheduled an appointment; no formal action was taken at the meeting. Administration and Parks & Recreation staff were asked to note the complaint; no direct reply from County Administrator Schaeffer was recorded on the meeting minutes.
The complaint was raised during public comment on May 14; commissioners did not vote on the matter at that session and asked that future communications be handled through scheduled appointments.
