Kalkaska Horse Project urges county to preserve tractor access and storage

A long-time volunteer with the Kalkaska Horse Project told commissioners the group needs tractor storage at the county horse barn and asked the county not to require additional grounds work that volunteers cannot sustain after decades of service.
Jody Southwell, a long-time member of the Kalkaska Horse Project, told the Kalkaska County Board of Commissioners Committee of the Whole that tractor access and storage at the horse barn is essential to the group's operations and discouraged additional county requests for mowing or weed-whacking that would increase the volunteers' workload.
"tractor access/storage is essential," Southwell said, noting more than 30 years of volunteer investment, utility responsibility and maintenance by group members. Southwell asked the board to continue accommodating storage at the horse barn and to avoid imposing additional grounds-work obligations that could overwhelm the project's volunteer capacity.
County Administrator David Schaeffer was asked by Chair Kohn Fisher to provide the existing Kalkaska Horse Project contract so the board could review current arrangements. The committee did not take immediate action but kept the matter on the record for follow-up with administration.
The issue arose during the public-input portion of the May 14 committee meeting; commissioners did not vote on new requirements during the session.
