Chisago Lakes LID awarded $75,000 grant to fight invasive phragmites; inspectors and monitoring expand

County Water Resources was selected for a Conservation Partners Legacy Grant in the amount of $75,000 to manage invasive phragmites within the LID, the board heard at its May 4 meeting.
Staff reported the grant will support on‑the‑ground control work and outreach across the district. The board was told 12 seasonal watercraft inspectors are expected to start at boat launches by the end of April, four of whom are returning from last year, and that more than 50 zebra‑mussel settling plates were distributed to volunteers on 19 lakes as part of monitoring efforts.
County Water Resources also noted that water level readings began two weeks earlier and that Slow‑No‑Wake guidance has been posted at boat launches and on the county website. Natural Shoreline Awards nominations will open June 1 and close July 5, and staff listed two upcoming outreach events: the Workshop on the Water (July 30 in Stillwater) and a well‑water screening clinic on June 11 at the North Branch Library.
The funding and expanded inspection staffing are intended to strengthen early detection and response to aquatic invasive species within the district; board members did not take a formal vote on new program expenditures at the meeting.
