Kay County PBA approves purchase of 300 centennial coins for courthouse 100th celebration

The Kay County Public Buildings Authority voted unanimously on March 23 to purchase 300 commemorative centennial coins to mark the Kay County Courthouse’s 100th anniversary.

Kay County District Attorney Brian Hermanson presented a quote and an image of the coins and reported that, "upon receipt of the official quote, the total cost for the coins was confirmed at $1,650.00," which covers 300 coins, a one‑time mold fee and a waived print fee. Hermanson said the coins are intended for the centennial celebration in October and proposed a $10 sale price to recover costs; any remaining proceeds would be applied to centennial expenses.

Shane Jones moved to approve the purchase and Jason Shanks seconded. The motion carried with all three trustees voting aye: Jeff Kreger, Shane Jones and Jason Shanks. The agenda item had been submitted by Sheriff Steve Kelley, who was not present at the meeting, and the minutes note that ordering the coins reflected the agreement of those in attendance at the previous meeting.

The trustees did not discuss alternative funding sources or specific distribution plans for the coins at the March 23 session; the record states proceeds will be applied to centennial expenses. The authority approved the purchase as a keepsake sale item and did not adopt further policy directives or budget amendments during the meeting.

The purchase follows routine procedural business at a special meeting convened at 8:45 a.m.; the session adjourned at 8:52 a.m.
