The Kay County Board of County Commissioners voted April 13 to purchase a large flag for the flagpole east of the Newkirk amphitheater. Commissioner Shane Jones moved the approval and Chairman Jeff Kreger seconded; the motion carried with Kreger, Jones and Vice‑Chairman Jason Shanks voting aye.
Commissioner Jason Shanks said he preferred the other commissioners' input because of a family connection to a Newkirk organization that has historically purchased flags for the site. As Shanks described it, "this Newkirk organization has historically purchased flags for this location twice a year, for Easter and Charlie Adams Day, and has requested that the County assume this responsibility moving forward." The flag size was discussed as approximately 10 x 15 feet with an estimated cost of $280. The board made no changes to the funding source during the motion.
