Wilkes County health department details move to new clinic; sheriff's security assessment prompts access changes

Wilkes County Health Department staff told the Board of Health April 13 that renovations are underway at the department's planned new site and that the move is targeted for the first week of June. "We are moving and grooving!" Ms. Rachel Willard said, describing painters working in hallways and progress scheduling for flooring and WIC space; Carolina West is vacating the space the week of Merlefest and floors are expected to follow.
Willard said the Sheriff's Office completed a security risk assessment and raised concerns that require access-control measures. She said cameras and badge readers are being installed but noted limitations because the elevator is not adjacent to the handicap ramp and first-floor tenants (including Gentiva and the hospital) prevent locking down the main floor. "He has been over there this week and the past week working on cameras and badge readers," Willard said. The board hopes the next meeting may be held in the new space once upgrades are complete.
