Council eyes funding help for aging playground, park repairs and a cemetery building

During the June 4 work session Huntsville councilors flagged the aging playground and park maintenance as priorities and reviewed cemetery needs including sprinkler repairs and discussion of a new cemetery building.
Council members and staff identified parks maintenance and playground repairs as immediate concerns during the budget review. The FY2026 expense list presented by Treasurer Melissa Knowles included park playground repairs ($20,000), playground chips ($3,500), sod ($10,000), and drinking fountains ($5,000). Council members expressed interest in HTownFund assistance for the aging playground.
Cemetery needs were also discussed: the worksheet lists cemetery sprinkler repairs ($5,000), burial permit and plot-sale revenue projections, and a proposed new building at the cemetery mentioned during the session. Staff noted that some cemetery perpetual-care revenues are invested for longer-term needs; no formal capital commitment was made at the work session.
