The Board of Selectmen approved a $45,671 appropriation to continue the town's water tank management program, funding maintenance of interior and exterior coatings on municipal tanks.
Utilities Director Jill Stevens said the town brings in specialists (she cited CoreTech) to perform nondestructive testing that measures coating thickness and steel condition to determine whether a tank needs recoating or replacement. Stevens said the polymer coatings used are approved by the Connecticut Department of Public Health and that the program is intended to prevent premature tank failures: "This is the 2nd year that we are participating in this program. They maintain that asset for us. As long as we continue in the program, they make sure that the coating is in good condition."
Board members asked whether the program covers interior as well as exterior work; Stevens confirmed it does and said prior ARPA‑funded recoating work helped avoid a replacement at Fargo. She also noted Vauxhall is being considered for next year's capital plan and that Rogers Hill represents a different, more expensive tank type.
The board voted by voice to approve the appropriation; staff will forward the item to the Board of Finance as required.
