Forest Youth Success program funding uncertain after federal grants freeze

Somer Meade, who provides oversight for the Forest Youth Success (FYS) program through WSU Extension, told the board the Forest Service initially froze grants that had included a $100,000 award for FYS. Meade said that a contract needed to operate the program was not being processed during the freeze.
Meade reported there has been recent movement: "The Forest Service reached out to let Somer know that they are going to be processing the reimbursement," though she cautioned that lifting the freeze and finalizing the agreement remain uncertain. Superintendent Ingrid Colvard and county partners have discussed stepping in to help manage timing and risk if needed; some of Meade’s work to date has been volunteer while the agreement has awaited approval.
Board members heard that community partners and the county are exploring risk-sharing to allow the program to operate while the grant paperwork clears at the federal level.
