Weatherford board authorizes up to $5M for electric parts and materials

The Weatherford Municipal Utility Board on Jan. 30 approved a consent-item authorization allowing staff to spend up to $5,000,000 cumulatively with Anixter Incorporated, Texas Electric Cooperatives and Texline/Techline for electric parts, materials and equipment. The board approved the consent motion after staff described the procurement and answered questions about transformer coverage.
Joe Farley, director of electric utilities, told the board the purchases cover routine and maintenance materials and that while individual purchases are typically under $50,000, annual cumulative spending can total much more. "This item is, basically requesting to purchase parts, materials, and equipment," Farley said, explaining vendors and cooperative purchasing arrangements used to source materials. He clarified the authorization covers overhead and pad-mounted distribution transformers; larger substation transformers would be brought to the board as separate bid items.
Board members asked about whether transformer replacements and emergency needs were covered; Farley confirmed distribution transformers are included within the authorization and that substation transformers will be procured via a separate bidding process. The motion to approve 6B carried on the board's vote.
The authorization allows staff to continue routine supply purchases through existing vendor relationships and cooperative purchasing programs; the board did not set specific line-item allocations, only a cumulative spending cap.
