At the March 27 board meeting, finance presenter Kathy McKee gave a Budget 101 walkthrough of the district’s major funds and revenue sources, noting categorical limits on some grants such as the Learning Assistance Program (LAP). She told the board the General Fund covers salaries, classroom supplies and insurance, while Transportation, Capital Projects and Debt Service have restricted uses.
McKee and Superintendent Ingrid Colvard told the board that the district’s enrollment is down by 60 students this year and the district will not receive SRS funding, contributing to a budget shortfall. The presenters identified potential savings avenues: consolidating buildings, cutting ESD contracts and copier contracts, and reducing staff full‑time equivalents. The board was asked to provide direction on enrollment projections and the minimum fund balance goal as staff prepare the budget.
Board members discussed the tradeoffs of program and staff reductions versus service impacts. The district audit has been completed and staff will return with detailed scenarios; no cuts were adopted at this meeting.
