Lyndon Institute asks to buy town football field, commission tables decision

Loralee Tester, president of the Lyndon Institute Board of Trustees, asked the Town of Lyndon Planning Commission on Jan. 28 to revisit the school’s long-standing interest in acquiring the town-owned football field and track. Tester said the school has considered ownership to address safety concerns with an aging track and to install lights and a new playing surface but has faced bank-financing obstacles because it does not own the property.
Tester told the commission the Institute would like to purchase the parcel for $1.00, continuing the existing relationship between the school and the town, and noted there is still approximately 12 years left on the current lease. Commissioners discussed whether a sale or a long-term lease would be appropriate, raised questions about tax implications and the property’s assessed value, and noted that any decision to sell town property would require Selectboard approval. The commission decided to table the discussion and resume it at a future meeting when all members are present.
