Study commission sends vacancy‑appointment question to June 2 ballot

The Anaconda‑Deer Lodge County Study Commission voted to send a single charter amendment to the June 2, 2026 primary ballot that would change how vacancies on the County Commission are filled. Chairman Huotte explained the proposal and recited the ballot language the commission will present to voters.

"Shall the Anaconda‑Deer Lodge County Charter be amended to change the process for replacing a vacant Count Commissioner seat to be appointed by the remaining Commissioners through application, interview and appointment process; this shall become effective upon passage," Chairman Huotte read while presenting Certificate D. The commission scheduled the measure to appear on the ballot in conjunction with the June 2 primary.

Commissioners said the change responds to concerns raised during the study but emphasized that the final report contains one recommendation only. Commissioner Kevin Hart and two fellow commissioners described low public turnout for the study as evidence that most residents are satisfied with county government, while noting the minority report will be attached to the final submission. The commission approved the report and ballot placement by a 3‑0 vote.
