Representative Brooks told the committee HB 1862 would require redaction of elected officials' personal identifying information held by government agencies where possible while preserving access for law enforcement, courts and other agencies. "This bill would make elected officials' personally identifying information held by governmental agency confidential," Brooks said, listing examples including home and personal cell phone numbers, addresses and Social Security numbers.
Representative McCallman thanked the sponsor and recounted that he had received death threats previously and supported the bill for the privacy and safety it affords to officials and their families. The clerk announced a unanimous committee vote in favor and the bill will go to the full committee.
