Commission approves Tovi Motors site variances after staff review

The McKinney Planning and Zoning Commission approved variances for the Tovi Motors auto repair site plan, voting to accept staff recommendations that an older-code requirement for screening overnight-stored vehicles is not required under the city's Unified Development Code. Jake Bennett, planner with the City of McKinney, told the commission staff had concluded the specific design exception was unnecessary after review.
The applicant, Zara Von Tovi, said the operation intends to store any vehicles that stay overnight inside service bays, which she said would enhance screening: "the intent for any vehicles that do have to stay the night is that they are going to be put inside of the bays themselves to protect the vehicles," Von Tovi said. Commissioners asked about bay orientation toward Highway 5 and whether approval should await a separate Highway 5 corridor study; Lucas Raley, director of planning, said the corridor study is a long-range effort (18–24 months) and does not control private development timing. The motion to approve passed following discussion.
