Commission to require rear placement and screening for utilities, trash and mechanicals in downtown overlay

Heather Carrington told the commission that the Lyndon Existing Conditions Report recommends that “Utilities, trash services and recycling services should be located at the rear of a building and screened from public view.” Carrington said the recommendation is consistent with downtown design goals and the commission agreed to include overlay language requiring mechanical structures, transformers, pumps, meters, trash and recycling to be placed at the rear of new buildings and screened from street view.
Commissioners noted this is not currently a widespread issue but supported adding clear overlay standards so future redevelopment will site mechanicals and service areas out of public view. Staff will add draft language to the overlay for review at a subsequent meeting.
