Water board reports nearly 4 million gallons lost in May; pipeline replacement and McKay hookup plans outlined

Ron Gault, the Huntsville Town water board manager, told the council crews are actively chasing large distribution losses and that the town recorded nearly 4 million gallons lost from the plant to the distribution system in May (about 3 million in April).
Gault said crews are digging at the reservoir and that the town is preparing an RFP for a pipeline replacement; the RFP could be submitted to the state Drinking Water Division by June 8 and posted around June 20, with an anticipated contract award early July. He outlined a recommended specification for the McKay Meadows hookup: connect to the existing 8‑inch C900 DR18 PVC main with an 8‑inch gate valve; use HDPE in a sealed sleeve for the segment routed under 100 S and Spring Creek; convert to 6‑inch C900 DR18 PVC for the subdivision distribution, and install a fire hydrant at the line end or commit to installation once houses are built. Gault said the recommended PVC standard matches materials used elsewhere in town and simplifies maintenance.
Council approved the budget measures that will support pipeline work and noted staff will pursue leak detection and repair. The town intends to use any available surplus from the pipeline replacement procurement to fund additional repairs to pipelines feeding the reservoir and return mains.
