Council hears flood-history briefing; FEMA withdraws some funding for planned projects

Councilmember Jessica Koehler reported on flood-committee activity and thanked Public Works Director Sunny Aulakh and Chief Jerry DeBruin for advocating for Sumas on flood-related matters. The mayor, the police chief and Public Works Director Aulakh also met with SCJ Consultants to review the history of flooding in the area and to discuss how recent changes are shaping the local flood narrative.
In the staff report, Public Works Director Sunny Aulakh said that Keith Boon will be involved with WID and the ditching district with the goal of beginning debris removal. Aulakh also noted that FEMA has withdrawn some funding for projects SWID had planned to start, potentially affecting the timing and scope of debris-removal work.
