Sanctuary-city resolution for gender diverse peoples fails to advance after no second

Mayor Jenny Taylor introduced a resolution described as "Declaring the City of Stevenson a Sanctuary City for Gender Diverse Peoples" during the March 5 special meeting. Councilmember Lucy Lauser said the measure aimed to support freedom of expression and moved to adopt it; the motion received no second and therefore did not proceed.
Public comment submitted and read into the record reflected divided views. Sam Kinestead and Karen Pettijohn opposed the sanctuary resolution, while Mary Repar supported it. Kathryn Fitzgerald thanked council members and urged the council to remove meeting recordings from YouTube; she also opposed the sanctuary proposal. Because the motion lacked a second, no formal vote on the resolution occurred and no ordinance or policy change was enacted. Councilmembers did not schedule a follow-up vote at that meeting.
