County seeks cybersecurity grant and YubiKey funding; IT warns replacements needed if grant denied

Commissioners authorized staff to apply for two separate cybersecurity-related grants: one for FortiGate firewall replacement and one to purchase YubiKey multifactor authentication tokens for county users.
"So these are little USB tokens that we would use for a multi factor authentication, for all the users throughout the county," Abraham, an IT representative, said while describing the proposed YubiKey purchase. Staff said the multifactor devices would be used countywide and that the OOG grant for firewalls would cover replacement of FortiGate units that are reaching end-of-support. Abraham told the court he believes the county has about 10 FortiGate firewalls that will need replacement.
Commissioners approved the resolution to apply for the cybersecurity grant (estimated up to about $80,258.82 with a 30% match) and discussed funding sources if the grant is not awarded. Staff said the county would have to pay for replacements out of county funds if the grant application is unsuccessful. The court asked staff to return with details about where any required local match would come from before final acceptance.
