County staff report rising permit activity; Brookings County Commission enacts burn ban

Deputy Director Richard Haugen reported April 7 that building-permit issuance in Brookings County has increased and previewed items expected on the May agenda.
Haugen also said the Brookings County Commission enacted a county-wide burn ban that morning in response to recent fires; he advised residents to call Brookings County Dispatch (605-692-2113) to determine the local fire chief and obtain approval before any planned burning. He noted two recent fires in the county and one in the City of Brookings.
Senior Planner Luke Muller added procedural advice for the board while considering zoning variances and conditional-use permits, advising that board members explicitly note "unique hardships" in findings when granting variances and generally make variances harder to obtain than conditional-use permits.
