Commissioners debate policy to handle mailboxes damaged during county road work; direct counsel and staff to draft options

Commissioners, legal counsel, purchasing staff and precinct foremen engaged in an extended discussion about how the county should handle private mailboxes damaged during road work.

Commissioner Holt said the current process can leave homeowners waiting weeks for court action and asked for a policy that gives each commissioner discretion to approve repairs up to a maximum amount so repairs can occur quickly. He framed the request as practical: "It's ridiculous" that a homeowner might wait weeks after a mailbox is damaged, he said.

County counsel and insurance staff said many claims involve questions of liability and that some large masonry structures have historically been handled through settlement agreements and insurance channels; counsel emphasized the importance of a release of liability when the county pays a property owner directly. Staff discussed vendor onboarding constraints and recommended using established vendors to speed repairs.

The court did not adopt a final policy at this meeting. Commissioners directed county attorney and finance staff to draft a policy and return it for consideration; they authorized staff to address the immediate, isolated mailbox instance under a temporary administrative approach so the homeowner's mailbox could be repaired without waiting for the next court session.
