Commissioner Jason Sharp updated the joint meeting on the Fire Territory process, saying a final public hearing was scheduled for Feb. 25, 2026, and that a formal vote on Highlander joining the territory is expected in March. He said staff are preparing an interlocal agreement between the Commissioners and the proposed territory to address EMS responsibilities.
Sharp summarized a financial analysis by Baker Tilly, saying it "would generate a little less than $12.2 million." He emphasized that the territory, if approved, will require rapid implementation work to be operational by the start of the next year. Council member Denise Konkle suggested using some excess Public Safety LIT to lower the rate for taxpayers.
No formal action was taken at the Feb. 24 meeting beyond the update and instructions to continue interlocal negotiations and preparations for the upcoming hearings and vote.
