Buffalo County officials discussed whether the county might need to hire a Medical Examiner in the future rather than rely on an elected coroner and explored sharing the position with neighboring counties. County administration said it had met with Coroner Cindy Giese, who (as reported) proposed a starting 2027 wage of about $10,500; the coroner position also receives a $175 per diem plus mileage.
County staff reviewed comparable payments in similarly populated counties and noted that comparables over the four-year period ranged from $6,600 to $7,265 for those counties, in part because Buffalo Countys per diem is higher than some peers. After discussion, Carol McDonough moved to set the 2027 wage at $8,500 with a 3.5% increase for each of the next three years; Mike Taylor seconded and a roll call vote carried the motion.
The committee asked staff to continue evaluating whether a shared Medical Examiner arrangement would better serve county needs and reported costs.
