Brookings resident urges 2,000-foot setback from proposed Power on Midwest towers

Sue Engleman, a Brookings County resident, used the county meeting's public-comment period to urge local officials to adopt a 2,000-foot setback for transmission lines with voltages greater than 345 kilovolts. "I am asking the Brookings County Commissioners and the Brookings County zoning board to match the dual county zoning setback requirements that transmission lines with voltages greater than 345 kilovolts must have a setback of 2,000 feet from any inhabited residents in all zoning districts," Engleman said.
Engleman described what she called environmental and health risks from large transmission towers proposed on a Power on Midwest route through Brookings County, including concerns about vegetation removal, gravel demand for foundations and electromagnetic fields. She urged commissioners to consider setbacks and studies before allowing the proposed corridor to move forward. No county action was taken on the transmission-line permitting plan at the meeting; staff later discussed forming a subcommittee to study potential regulations for high-voltage lines.
