Porter trustees adopt ordinance tightening weeds and trash rules, add commercial property language

Trustees for the Town of Porter on March 5 adopted Ordinance No. 2026-2, amending Sections 8-102, 8-104, 8-106, 8-115 and adding Sections 8-116 and 8-117 to Chapter 1 (Weeds and Trash) of the town's Health and Sanitation code. The motion to adopt the ordinance was made by Mayor Steve Dickey and seconded by Kevin Walker; the vote was unanimous.
Town Attorney Terri Craig proposed a textual change to Section 8-115 to extend the prohibition on visible dilapidated personal property to commercial establishments. The ordinance language as read at the meeting includes: "No person or commercial establishment shall allow any dilapidated personal property to remain outside any residence, building, or other portion of a building or dwelling which he owns or occupies." Trustees approved the ordinance with that amendment.
The change expands the existing provision to cover nonresidential properties and is intended to give the town clearer authority to require removal or remediation of visibly dilapidated items on commercial property. The ordinance was adopted during the regular meeting after the town attorney arrived and reviewed the proposed language; no further amendments were recorded.
