The Floyd County Council voted 5-1 April 28 to approve an Interlocal Agreement consolidating EMS services with the Georgetown Township Fire Protection District and to appropriate up to $2,500,000 from the Public Safety Fund to implement the plan.
Kristi Fox, the county attorney, told the joint meeting the Interlocal establishes the EMS structure and requires each governing body's approval to proceed. Fox provided an approximate cost breakdown: "$325,000.00 for transition, $181,000.00 for ongoing EMS Deputy Chief compensation, $1,800,000.00 to get up and running," figures presented to explain the requested appropriation. The Council passed the resolution approving the Interlocal Agreement (Resolution 2026-03) 5-1; Council member Jim Freiberger opposed, saying representatives from Lafayette and Greenville Township were unhappy with the arrangement.
The same 5-1 tally applied when the Council voted to appropriate up to $2.5 million out of Public Safety Fund 1170 to support start-up and transition costs. Commissioners also approved the Interlocal Agreement in a separate vote. Officials noted ongoing concerns from some township representatives about tax impacts and oversight; the record shows the bodies approved the agreement and funding while noting dissent.
