CRA approves multiple storefront and façade grants for downtown and Cleveland Avenue properties

The Community Redevelopment Agency approved a package of commercial property improvement matching grants for local businesses and property owners across multiple CRA districts.

Presentations by Xavier Colon described each application: Bear Roots Holding Company (2011 Bayside Parkway) requested $45,086.24 under a tier-1 grant (70% reimbursement, max $50,000) for parking pavers, landscaping, fencing and exterior demo; commissioners approved the request. The Franklin Shops (2201 1st Street) applied for a tier-1 grant to replace glass-block walls (estimated $78,461.24); commissioners asked whether the Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) needed to review the work and voted to return the item to the agenda after HPC consideration. Something Bridal (1611 Fowler Street) requested a $27,240 grant to replace an accessibility ramp and do exterior repairs; that motion passed. Streets Property (2219 Main Street) applied for a tier-2 grant (50% up to $200,000) and the board recommended funding $100,000 due to year-end availability; the HBC had approved recommended restoration in backup. DAK Property (1520 Broadway) requested $7,987.50 for exterior patching and paint; commissioners approved. Elias Properties and Best Care Family & Wellness requested tier-2 grants for façade, storefront and site work on Cleveland Avenue (estimates and 50% cost shares were presented); those items were approved with staff confirmation that Cleveland Avenue funds were available.

Commissioners repeatedly noted the benefit of activating long-vacant storefronts and restoring historic corridors. Several motions passed by voice vote or standard motions; one item (Franklin Shops) was referred back to ensure HPC participation.
