Commission debates whether the county should fund markers for organizations

At the Aug. 26 meeting commissioners received updates that several historical markers are in production or procurement, including a marker for Georgetown Technical College and markers referencing the Waccamaw Indian people and Hickory Grove.
One commissioner objected to the county using limited commission funds to pay for markers when organizations or institutions could pay for their own; "We shouldn't be funding markers for organizations that can afford it themselves," the commissioner said. Staff replied that manufacturers need a letter of approval from the South Carolina Department of Archives and History (SHPO) before a marker can be placed, and that the commission has processed markers where no community group existed to fund them.
No formal vote was held. Commissioners asked staff to coordinate with applicants and to be more deliberate about when the commission uses its funds versus encouraging community or institutional sponsorship.
