Commission approves restoration plan for 1875 Socastee United Methodist Church sanctuary

"Our intent will be to pull the vinyl off and do a full repaint restoration," Bill Singleton said as he and Chip Smith described plans to remove aluminum siding from the 1875 Socastee United Methodist Church sanctuary and restore original wood and windows.
Applicants said they have engaged JC Hollingworth Engineering to evaluate structure and will replace damaged siding with custom-milled, native wood where necessary. They also acknowledged required lead-paint remediation and said any structural repairs or work beyond the COA scope would be brought back to the commission. Staff recommended approval and commissioners praised the applicants for taking a preservation-minded approach. A motion to grant the COA passed unanimously.
The applicants said they would coordinate visits for commissioners to inspect the building and will return for any additional approvals if roof or structural work requires changes to the approved exterior restoration.
