Vereen Gardens volunteers ask commission for directional signs and permission to repair failing fence
Summary

Cheryl Patterson, chairperson of the Vereen Memorial Historical Gardens volunteer committee, told the Horry County Historic Preservation Commission on Aug. 26 that the committee has roughly 20 volunteers and needs signage to direct visitors to the Bridal Road/old King’s Highway. "We have a wonderful sign outside that talks about it, but we don't have any signs that give direction where the road is," she said.
Patterson also asked whether the committee needed permission to replace a wooden rail fence at the site, saying parts of the fence are collapsing and some boards have been damaged by vehicles. A county representative explained that maintenance of the fence is normally handled by county parks staff and that repairs should be coordinated with them; commissioners advised volunteers to seek an estimate and arrange for county involvement. A commissioner confirmed the fence was installed around 2018–2019 and advised that replacing like-for-like materials would be acceptable.
Alan Todd of Conway Architectural Salvage and Heritage Project said his nonprofit collects and preserves salvaged building materials and offered to help with repair materials and student engagement from Coastal (as he stated). The commission suggested staff pass the project packet and existing materials to the parks and recreation director so volunteers and staff can coordinate next steps.
The discussion produced no formal vote; commissioners encouraged the applicant to provide the packet and cost estimates and to coordinate with county maintenance rather than performing unpermitted work.
Next steps: staff agreed to provide copies of the consultant packet and to ask Parks and Recreation to evaluate the fence repairs and coordinate a site visit.
