The committee adopted a draft FY2027 budget calendar after extended discussion about process, public engagement and how to make community forums useful.
Superintendent Murphy outlined the timeline: initial community focus groups in December, budget updates in January and February, superintendent's preliminary recommendations March 11, statutory public hearing March 17, committee adoption sought April 7 and City Council consideration in early May. Member Harding and others urged additional committee workshops and clearer public materials so community participants can meaningfully evaluate trade-offs.
Mayor Simmons and multiple members recommended inviting city finance staff or the city manager to budget workshops so the community understands fixed costs, available local resources, and potential impacts from broader fiscal changes. The calendar was approved by roll call; the administration said the schedule is a draft and can be supplemented by the committee.
