Resident urges county-wide moratorium on sludge spreading after alleged contamination

Eva Turner of Cameron Mills told the Legislature she lives near contaminated water and soil that she attributes to sludge spread on neighboring farmland and requested a county-wide moratorium on sludge spreading to prevent more towns from experiencing similar contamination.
Turner said she lives near towns such as Thurston and Cameron that she described as living with "toxic" environmental conditions from sludge application. Her remark was offered during the public-comment period; the record includes no follow-up from staff or a motion directing study or a moratorium.
The public-comment period also included other topics; Chair Fitzpatrick thanked speakers before moving to agenda items. Any legislative response or staff follow-up would need to be requested at a later meeting or directed to an appropriate committee for investigation.
