Councilman Powers to resign Oct. 7; council to appoint successor if term under six months

Councilman Powers announced at the Sept. 23 meeting that he will resign effective Monday, Oct. 7, 2024. Powers said he ran to serve one term and did not seek re-election when District 4 opened this year.
The city attorney (speaker 24) read charter language for filling vacancies: if less than six months remain in the unexpired term the council, by a vote of three or more members, will appoint a successor who must live in the district and be a city resident for at least a year. The council said it will address the vacancy procedurally. Powers thanked colleagues and said he is grateful for the opportunity to serve; the mayor and council thanked him in turn.
