Hays resident urges commissioners to cut expenses and questions proposed Doppler radar funding
Summary
John Pyle told the commission he wants the county to pursue expense reductions and asked whether the board would fund a proposed Doppler radar to close a local radar gap; commissioners said no county funding request had been made though a support letter for a federal grant had been discussed.

John Pyle of Hays used his public-comment time to ask the commission whether it had ever considered reducing expenses across county departments and whether the county would fund a proposed Doppler radar to fill a local gap in storm coverage. "Have you all ever considered reduction of expenses?" Pyle asked. "I know you all look forward to getting your big raise every year with the property valuations."
Pyle also said a group in Hays had presented about funding a Doppler-type radar and asked whether the commission had seen that request. Commissioners responded that the county had not received a formal funding request for a radar and that the presentation Pyle referenced had been to an amateur-radio group, not this commission. One commissioner said the presenter had asked county staff to sign a support letter for a federal grant application but had not requested county funding. Pyle said he would follow up with the presenter to clarify the request.
