Wyoming County Community Hospital reports lower inpatient volumes, plans RHC application

Wyoming County Community Hospital (WCCH) provided an operational update to the Finance Committee on April 7 that included lower inpatient and emergency department volumes tied to an ongoing mobile CT issue and plans to pursue higher-reimbursing designations for outpatient services.
Administrator J. Perry said January inpatient volumes were "about 40% off from prior year" and emergency department visits were down about 15%, with regional volume down just over 10%. At the same time, swing-bed utilization and surgery volumes were reported as stronger: "swing beds profitable are up about 5% over prior year" and "surgery up 10% compared to PY," the minutes state. Perry said the hospital expects to receive a catch-up payment from Medicare for some costs associated with these disruptions.
Perry described plans for the Attica Clinic to apply to convert to an Article 28 Rural Health Clinic, which the minutes say would allow higher Medicare payments and access to the 340B drug-pricing program. He also mentioned possible bidding for medical services at a neighboring county nursing home and continuing issues in Thomson Hall (basement humidity and leaks) that affect WCCH staff locations. The committee requested a fuller quarterly update including financials in May.
