On July 13 the Rye Select Board authorized town staff to prepare a request for proposals for a comprehensive traffic and speed study of the Rye Beach Route 1A corridor. The motion, made by Selectman Scott McQuade, directs the Town Administrator, Public Works Director and Police Chief to solicit proposals for 24-hour traffic volume counts, April speed studies, turn movement intersection counts, peak-hour analysis, crash-history review, pedestrian and bicycle counts, roadway capacity and level-of-service, parking-utilization studies and recommendations for speed signage, traffic calming, crosswalks, parking and enforcement.
Chair Rob Wright offered and the board accepted a friendly amendment to seek an engineering firm to help write the RFP and scope costs. The motion passed unanimously. Residents at the meeting supported the study: Nicole Paul voiced support during public comment and Ryan McGill thanked the board for pursuing safety data. The RFP is intended to guide any subsequent ordinance changes or enforcement actions.
