Officials approve 2026 truck purchase as county weighs rising chassis prices and bridge repairs

Dan Stocker of Stoops Automotive reviewed recent chassis purchases and warned that upcoming 2027 diesel emission standards and potential steel-tariff surcharges could push chassis prices well above current levels. "The estimated cost of a 2026 chassis will be $145,000 with an estimated cost in 2027 of $175,000-$200,000," Mr. Stocker said, and suggested some counties are pre-buying to avoid higher prices.
Commissioners approved a motion to authorize purchase of a 2026 truck pending approval of the 2026 budget. Highway staff also described multiple bridge and culvert needs: bridge #114 is nearly complete except for guardrail, a hole at the site of bridge #113 will be monitored while a culvert replacement is planned (estimated $275,000), and several small-structure repairs were estimated at about $250,000. Commissioners recommended splitting funding sources (proposed $100,000 from Cum Cap Dev and $175,000 from EDIT pending council approval) and approved Link Dozing LLC's $28,000 installation quote for the culvert work.
The board also approved purchasing available oversized stone from US Aggregates at $8/ton for county use and accepted a SJCA task order amendment of $4,202.22 to add detour mileage to SR 18 pre- and post-construction assessments.
