Regionwide Safer Streets grant team seeks county steering input; Commissioner Aker volunteers

Darlesia Lee, Assistant Director of Regional Economic Development & Planning (ECIRPD), and Mathew Nichols, SS4A project manager, briefed the board on the Safer Streets & Roads for All federal grant awarded in July 2024 and the plan to develop a regional action plan.
Mr. Nichols described the grant's Vision Zero aim and why a coordinated steering committee is needed: "vision zero, which is to eliminate the more than 42,000 people killed annually on American streets," he said, and asked the county to provide a commissioner or designee to attend four steering-committee meetings from April–December 2025.
Mrs. Lee outlined that once a regional action plan is complete the group will pursue additional federal funding, and asked commissioners for feedback on key safety concerns, existing initiatives and opportunities for interlocal collaboration. Commissioner Chad Aker volunteered to serve on the steering committee and recommended outreach to Jay County Sheriff's Office, Portland Police Department and Jay County EMS for additional representation.
