Commission approves relocation and hours for Canyons amenity-center pickleball courts

The Planning Commission voted to approve a major amendment to the Canyon House amenity‑center site improvement plan (SIP Major‑2024‑003) to add four pickleball courts at a new location north of the pool house. Staff told the commission the revised location exceeds 500 feet from the nearest residences and that a noise study showed typical play would not exceed local and state limits; staff recommended placing operational-hour restrictions on the courts.

Shea Homes’ Ryan McDermott described the relocated layout, noting one ADA‑accessible court adjacent to parking and three additional courts north of that court. McDermott said the site was designed with resident‑only access control and fencing that can structurally support heavier acoustic panels (e.g., Acoustifence) if future sound monitoring indicates mitigation is needed. “We removed those pickleball courts, went a little bit further in our studies and research and relocated them into an area we thought was more appropriate for the community,” McDermott said.

Commissioners asked about pedestrian and ADA access to the northern courts (which require a trail routing around stairs), drainage (applicant said no major infrastructure impacts), and whether future acoustic treatments could be added (applicant confirmed the fence is sized to accept that option). The approval was conditional on payment of fees, technical corrections and posting the courts’ hours; the staff‑recommended hours restrict play between 7 AM and 10 PM (the motion references a 10PM–7AM restriction to be noted on the SIP). The motion passed on a roll call vote with one commissioner recorded as opposed and the remainder voting in favor.
