Board backs $1,000 BPOL cap increase for advertisement; ordinance, public hearing to follow

The Middlesex County Board of Supervisors agreed during its May 4 budget work session to amend the draft budget to reflect a $1,000 increase to the Business, Professional and Occupational License (BPOL) tax cap, raising it from $7,500 to $8,500 for the 2026–27 fiscal year.
Supervisor William A. Harris said he was concerned about doubling the cap and urged a more gradual approach; other members shared that view and the group reached a consensus to include a $1,000 raise in the advertised budget. The change is expected to generate about $44,000 in additional revenue, a figure noted by staff. County Attorney Heather W. Lewis said a change in the tax structure would require an ordinance and indicated she would prepare to advertise for a public hearing.
The Board did not adopt language into ordinance form at the work session; the item will proceed through the required advertisement and hearing process before any final tax-code change is enacted.
