County elections official announces special election set for Aug. 26

A county elections official (Michelle) told the board that the governor set a special election for August 26 following the passing of Senator DeWitt and that she has been coordinating with the Secretary of State’s office on logistics. "I just wanted to bring it to your attention that you all probably have heard that we will have a special election on, August 26," she said, adding the county will have 22 precincts voting (about half the county) and that party conventions will nominate candidates for the major parties.
Michelle said the filing deadline for nonparty candidates is August 1 and that she will publish a press release with polling-location details; she also explained a special election cannot be held at the same time as a school election under state law, which is why the date does not coincide with the November ballot. Board members expressed concern about the cost and logistical burden of holding a separate election so close to regular elections.
