City weighs GPS snowplow tracking and AI pavement-assessment software for faster response and consistent PCI scores

Public Works staff proposed two software purchases intended to improve winter response and road-condition planning: a GPS snowplow-tracking system with a public-facing map to show completed routes, and an AI-based pavement-condition-index (PCI) tool that uses video to produce consistent road-condition scores.
Staff said the snow-tracking system would let supervisors and residents see which routes are complete and allow contractors access so all routes can be monitored. "This will definitely help a lot, our snow response, help our guys, and also help residents see where we are," a presenter said. For PCI, staff said the current manual process is subjective and time-consuming; AI processing of video footage would standardize assessments, integrate with GIS and reduce repeated rework. Implementation costs were described at approximately $25,000 with modest recurring service fees; staff will identify vendors and return with formal procurement recommendations.
