Residents criticize temporary speed cushions on 14th Street; staff says cushions were petition‑driven and temporary

During public comments, Rosemary Moring (1445 West Branch St.) urged the council to reconsider temporary speed cushions recently installed on 14th Street and South of Drew, saying they are too frequent and that some drivers swing into the middle of the street to avoid them. “This is overkill,” Moring said, describing difficulty leaving driveways and a prior back injury aggravated by repeated speed cushions.
Elizabeth Issa (Development Services) responded that the corridor petition produced 48 signatures in favor of traffic calming; the original applicant requested 11 cushions, staff recommended five and they settled on eight temporary cushions. Staff said the cushions are temporary (about six months) and that adjustments to height or relocation can be made if data show they are obtrusive. Council members discussed permanent asphalt speed humps/tables as a less jarring alternative but noted costs and potential repaving issues; the item will be further considered at an April visioning session.
