Parents and students urge AISD to halt late‑term Paredes change; students also oppose 8‑period day

At the start of the meeting four in‑person speakers urged the board to delay or reconsider a proposed Paredes reassignment and to give families more notice. Amy Moore told trustees, "Our 11 to 14 year olds deserve an education with exploration and curiosity, not 1 narrowly focused on accountability metrics dictated by TEA," and asked for a clear staffing and support plan for middle schools ahead of the new year.
Recorded callers and student speakers also opposed both the closure and a proposed eight‑class‑period day. A student who identified themself as an Austin High AP student said an 8‑period day "will put so much stress on both staff and students" and warned 45‑minute periods would force teachers to rush complex material. Laurie Solis, identified as vice president of the Austin Council of PTAs, thanked the district for listening sessions but criticized the timing: "Presenting school closure as an urgent solution just weeks before the start of the school year reflects, at best a failure to plan proactively."
