A Cumberland County Schools representative reported to the board on May events and achievements, saying the district saw graduations, awards days and field days across all grade levels and that the boys and girls track teams participated in the state meet at JMU.
"Our girls came back as the state class 1 champions," the schools representative said, noting the district had not won a track championship since 1978. The superintendent announced a parade to celebrate the champions on June 24 at 7 p.m., with a permit already approved by VDOT.
School staff also emphasized increased community outreach, several honors and academic growth metrics (the transcript reports improved ranking and growth relative to a consortium of 81 divisions). The schools representative listed upcoming town halls on June 30, July 7 and July 8 to solicit community feedback and discuss district goals.
Board members thanked the schools staff and encouraged public attendance at celebration events. The schools presentation was delivered during the community service provider reports portion of the meeting.
