Wabaunsee County commissioners approve disaster declaration after severe storms

Emergency Management Coordinator Amy Terrapin asked the Wabaunsee County Commission on April 27 to issue a Disaster Declaration following storms the previous night that affected multiple counties. Terrapin said the damage "may meet the threshold required for a Federal Designation" and urged county and township officials to begin damage assessments, take photographs and document all damage and repair work to support any potential FEMA request.
The commission agreed to the declaration. Commissioners Nancy Hier, Boyd Davis and Chairman Jim W. MacGregor directed staff and townships to complete assessments and keep a record of repairs. The declaration does not itself guarantee federal aid; Terrapin explained that a federal declaration would be determined by state and federal review of submitted damage information.
The recommendation and agreement to declare a disaster came during routine reports at the meeting and will be followed by county and township documentation efforts to establish the scope of damage.
