Wes Easton of Regional Transit Commission (RTC) told the Logan County Board of Commissioners on Dec. 10 that the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) will not award a contract until a required audit is finished and that RTC cannot continue covering operating costs.
“RTC cannot continue to support public transit and that RTC cannot continue to pay for fuel from their pockets,” Easton said, and informed the board that RTC plans to suspend public transportation in the first week of February 2025 if the audit and contract award are not resolved. The commissioners heard this during the public participation portion of the Dec. 10 meeting.
County Administrator David Henry told the board he had also received follow-up communication and that the county will adjust related budgets after the start of the year if RTC discontinues paying utilities at the West Auburn site. Commissioners did not take immediate action but logged the issue for future budget adjustments and follow-up with ODOT and RTC.
The potential suspension affects riders across Logan County who rely on public transit for work and appointments; the board did not set a timeline for contingency planning at the Dec. 10 or Dec. 12 meetings. Easton’s update did not include a specific dollar amount for the shortfall, and no formal county decision on supplemental funding was made at these meetings.
